As I write this, I’m totally disgusted by where our Muslim youth is being taken. Now as you read the title maybe you disagreed to it as you probably believe that this day promotes love and affection. I’m sorry but it is a day that encourages indecency, immorality, corruption, immodesty and what not. If I go out and ask Muslims celebrating this day; if they know the history of Valentine’s day, half of the people wouldn’t even know because they’re too busy following the trends blindly.
For those of you who still don’t know where this emerged from, let me take you back to the 3rd century in Rome, where Emperor Claudius II decided that single soldiers served the country better than those who were married and had wives. So he outlawed marriages for his soldiers. St. Valentine was a Christian priest who realized the injustice to the soldiers and got them married secretly. When Claudius II discovered Valentine’s actions, he ordered that Valentine should be put up to death. Now in jail, Valentine fell in love with the Jailors daughter and wrote her a letter before dying that said “From Your Valentine”. This day is celebrated in dedication to Valentine’s death. At some places it says that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in February to Christian-ize a pagan festival “The Lupercalia” in which the women of the city would put their names in an urn and the men would pick up a name and would spend a year with that woman.
Now you know why this day is actually celebrated, let me tell you that this day holds no reality in Islamic shariah. You might be wondering if Islam is against love, or if it discourages it. The answer is NO.. Islam is not against love but against the direction in which this love is taking our youth. Allah mentions in Surah Al-Isra (ayah 32): “and do not come near to adultery, it is a shameful deed and an evil, opening the road to other evils.” And by this we are warned not to go close to anything that takes us to fornication. Allah is closing the barriers before any consequences take place. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) says: “Modesty only brings good” and at another place, “When you lose the good quality of modesty then do what you wish” and this is the outcome of immodesty, that when a person becomes immodest the animalistic qualities are built into him and then we see what is prevalent in society, the immodesty, the immorality, the filth that is prevalent in the society especially amongst our youngsters. Islam is against immodesty, Islam is a religion of peace, Islam promotes justice, Islam wants each and every individual in the society to be safeguarded which is why it promotes modesty. Unfortunately the society we are living in promotes vice versa. Valentine’s Day is fading away the marriage system and the real meaning of love, instead developing a so called love that is purely lust. Islam has no room for such immodesty. Islam has been completed so additions to it will not be accepted. Lastly, the Islamic law does not agree to the commemoration of Valentine’s Day, therefore celebrating it is out of question!
